About Ravindra Kalakshetra

Ravindra Kalakshetra is the state's flagship auditorium for Kannada theatre and culture, on JC Road beside the Town Hall. Its foundation stone was laid on 16 September 1960 and it opened on 9 March 1963, built to mark the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore to a design by architect Charles Wilson. The hall seats about 900, including a 400-seat balcony, and an open-air stage, the Samsa theatre, shares the premises. Kannada plays, state award functions, folk and classical performances and theatre festivals fill most of the calendar. It sits at the edge of the old Pete, close to KR Market and Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace.
